FD NeuroTechnologies, Inc（USA）公司生产的FD退化神经元银染试剂盒（FD NeuroSilver™ Kit II）特别开发用于实验动物中枢神经系统（CNS）固定组织切片内的退化神经元检测。该试剂盒检测原理基于发现正衰退神经元上的一些元件比如溶酶体、轴突和末梢出现特别的嗜银性。在某些特定条件下，这些细胞元件高亲和性结合银离子。一旦还原后，银离子形成光学或电子显微镜下可见的金属颗粒。
FD退化神经元银染试剂盒（FD NeuroSilver™ Kit II）广泛用在各种实验条件下的动物研究中。该试剂盒经证实高度特异性检测大脑和脊髓内衰退神经元胞体、轴突和末梢，且灵敏度非常高。该试剂盒还适合用来检测少量衰退神经元，特别是那些用传统组织病理染色技术未检测到的。
FD退化神经元银染试剂盒（FD NeuroSilver™ Kit II）还被证实能检测转基因小鼠大脑的淀粉样斑块（amyloid plaques），结果非常灵敏且可靠。还可用于免疫组化组织切片的神经衰退和/或淀粉样斑块检测。本试剂盒整个操作流程约需1h。

图1. 大鼠中风模型大脑神经衰退的检测 Detection of neurodegeneration in the rat brain of a stroke model. 40 µm cryostat section was cut coronally through the striatum of a rat used as an animal model of stroke. The section was processed for demonstrating neuronal damage with FD NeuroSilver™ Kit. Note the accumulation of metallic silver grains (black) in both the striatum and the cortex, indicating the presence of neurodegeneration.
